Rare diseases caused by mutations

Dr. Nora Yang is Senior Scientist for the Rare Diseases unit at the National Institutes of Health and she leads research efforts on treatments for these diseases. She has published a number of recent papers describing efforts to develop “gene therapy” treatments for diseases, like muscular dystrophy.
1) Please read a brief biography for Dr. Yang.
2) We’ve already learned a bit about muscular dystrophy, but we will review two more videos regarding this disease as a way to refresh our ideas about a variety of concepts we’ve studied.  First review this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ebu8W8Osuxk ) on muscular dystrophy. Then review this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PHhTtb1OVA ) on gene therapy for muscular dystrophy. This is directly from the research group with which Dr. Yang works!
–In the videos, pay special attention to terms we’ve recently studied, like actin, CK, fibrosis/scar tissue – and terms from earlier in class – chromosomes, genes, nucleotides, codons, replication, stop codons, exons, and amino acids!–
After reviewing these resources, write your responses. You might wish to discuss any or all of the following topics:
1)  What was most interesting or most confusing about the these resources?
2)  What did you learn about how muscular dystrophy impacts muscle fiber and sarcomere physiology?  What did you learn about how muscular dystrophy and gene therapy impact transcription and translation?
3)  What do these resources tell you about the types of people that do science?
4)  What new questions do you have after reviewing these resources? The post Rare diseases caused by mutations first appeared on Quality University Essay.

Assignment Content
Review the following Case Study taken from your text, and answer the critical thinking questions that follow.
Subaru’s Sales Boom Thanks to the Weaker YenFor the Japanese carmaker Subaru, a sharp fall in the value of yen against the U.S. dollar has turned a problemthe lack of U.S. productioninto an unexpected sales boom. Subaru, which is a niche player in the global auto industry, has long bucked the trend among its Japanese rivals of establishing significant manufacturing facilities in the North American market. Instead, the company has chosen to concentrate most of its manufacturing in Japan in order to achieve economies of scale at its home plants, exporting its production to the United States. Subaru still makes 80 percent of its vehicles at home, compared with 21 percent for Honda.
Back in 2012, this strategy was viewed as something of a liability. In those days, one U.S. dollar bought only 80 Japanese yen. The strong yen meant that Subaru cars were being priced out of the U.S. market. Japanese companies like Honda and Toyota, which had substantial production in the United States, gained business at Subaru’s expense. But from 2012 onward, with Japan mired in recession and consumer prices falling, the country’s central bank repeatedly cut interest rates in an attempt to stimulate the economy. As interest rates fell in Japan, investors moved money out of the country, selling yen and buying the U.S. dollar. They used those dollars to invest in U.S. stocks and bonds where they anticipated a greater return. As a consequence, the price of yen in terms of dollars fell. By December 2015, one dollar bought 120 yen, representing a 50 percent fall in the value of the yen against the U.S. dollar since 2012.
For Subaru, the depreciation in the value of the yen has given it a pricing advantage and driven a sales boom. Demand for Subaru cars in the United States has been so strong that the automaker has been struggling to keep up. The profits of Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, have surged. In February 2015, Fuji announced that it would earn record operating profits of around 410 billion ($3.5 billion) for the financial year ending March 2015. Subaru’s profit margin has increased to 14.4 percent, compared with 5.6 percent for Honda, a company that is heavily dependent on U.S. production. The good times continued in 2015, with Subaru posting record profits in the quarter ending December 31, 2015.
Despite its current pricing advantage, Subaru is moving to increase its U.S. production. It plans to expand its sole plant in the United States, in Indiana, by March 2017, with a goal of making 310,000 a year, up from 200,000 currently. When asked why it is doing this, Subaru’s management notes that the yen will not stay weak against the dollar forever, and it is wise to expand local production as a hedge against future increases in the value of the yen. Indeed, when the Bank of Japan decided to set a key interest rate below zero in early February 2016, the yen started to appreciate against the U.S. dollar, presumably on expectations that negative interest rates would finally help stimulate Japans sluggish economy. By late March 2016, the yen had appreciated against the dollar and was trading at $1=112 yen.
Critical Thinking Questions:1. Why do you think that historically, Subaru chose to export production from Japan, rather than set up manufacturing facilities in the United States like its Japanese rivals? 2. What are the currency risks associated with Subaru’s export strategy? What are the potential benefits? 3. Is Subaru wise to expand its U.S. production capacity? What other strategies could the company use to hedge against adverse changes in exchange rates? What are the pros and cons of the different hedging strategies Subaru might adopt?Your submission should be a minimum of one-half page of content in length. Please type the question as well as your answer. Properly cite any references utilized in APA format. The post – Global Business Week 9 first appeared on Quality University Essay.

Close Encounter Field Observations and Research

Instructions
For this assignment, each student should spend a minimum of 30 minutes observing at least one living organism. This should not be an organism that you already spend a lot of time with, for that reason I will not accept assignments written about household pets – your dog, or cat or a friends dog or cat. You can observe organisms in captivity, so zoos, pet stores, the aquarium are okay – but it would be better to look outside if you can take a hike or visit the lake shore and explore what you see out there.
Take careful notes of your observations and be specific; try to find a way to collect numerical measurements of the physical traits or behaviors you observe. For example, if I were observing birds at a bird feeder I could measure the length of time that individual birds spend feeding at a bird feeder before flying away or which species of birds feed at the same bird feeder simultaneously, and I could take notes of interesting behaviors or characteristics of individual birds. You might decide to take short video clips that you can review to observe behaviors.
From your observations and notes, develop a specific question and find at least 1 peer-reviewed source and 1 other reliable source of information that can help you understand the traits or behaviors of the organism(s) you observed.
You will submit a written description of your observations, the specific question you asked, a summary of the sources you found in your research and a complete citation of the reference. The citation may be formatted according to the style common in your discipline, but it must contain at least the author(s), date, title, publication title or publisher, and the URL or DOI for digital sources.

Case study- education

Part of a special educators responsibilities include understanding the characteristics of the major disability categories and how the characteristics affect typical development. When conducting observations and consulting with staff who work with students with disabilities, teachers must be able to articulate the differences in development and prescribe appropriate interventions. Understanding the effect of culture and language development must also be considered in meeting student needs.
Case Study:  LarissaGrade:  3rdAge:  8Larissa is a female third grade student with a specific learning disability in written expression and an executive functioning disorder. She is originally from El Salvador and moved to the U.S. with her mother, father, older sister, and newborn brother when she was 14 months old. In first grade, she was assessed for special education services and was found eligible in the areas of written expression and executive functioning due to a diagnosis of dyslexia and ADHD by an outside psychologist referred by her primary care physician. Larissas verbal expression is close to grade level, but when asked to express her thoughts on paper, she often uses lower level vocabulary and fragmented sentences, and her writing lacks organization. This could be due to her inability to focus on longer tasks as well as her difficulty with spelling, written expression, and multiple languages spoken in the home. Larissa also struggles with starting tasks independently, staying on task, and with task completion. She often cannot find her materials when needed such as pencils, paper, assignments, books, etc.Recently, her mother and father separated. Her mother has since moved the children out of their home and in with family friends. The family friends have three children and two adults living in the home already, so the three bedroom, one bath home is very crowded. Their new home is within walking distance of Rosewood Elementary, where Larissa has recently transferred.Larissas mother, Rita, has a job in which she works long hours and is currently struggling to establish her own line of credit. At home, Larissas family speaks both English and Spanish. Rita considers English her primary language; however, Spanish is her first language and she sometimes has difficulty understanding written English, despite speaking it well.At a recent parent-teacher conference with Larissas teacher, Mr. Fleming, Rita shared that she obtained an order of protection against her husband after they separated. Because the order of protection extends to the children, she provided Mr. Fleming legal documentation of the order. The day after the conference, Mr. Fleming notified the office and gave them the documentation in the event that Larissas father should come to the school.
Using the information from the case study, address the following in a 1,000-1,250 word essay:
Discuss how the Christian worldview perspective can be demonstrated in professional practice by explaining why teachers need to be committed to respecting students individual strengths, interests, and needs to promote each students growth and potential.Explain how language, culture, and family background influence the students student’ learning.Describe three research-based, specially designed instructional strategies that can be used to respond to the developmental differences and individual needs of the student.Cite research to provide justification for how the selected strategies provide specially designed instruction and access to the general education curriculum and standards as required by IDEA.
Support the assignment with at least three scholarly resources. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required. The post Case study- education first appeared on Quality University Essay.
